Our work is not just about “dressing up”. Objects are a very important element in costumed interpretation. Sometimes we there to interpret artefacts in a museum or historical site and on other occasions we use objects to help us set the scene.
This is particularly useful for our 20th century characters Muriel and Jasper who are often at events that focus on relatively recent history and are used as a means to jog memories or reminisce about “the old days”.
Here are a selection of objects we have used in relation to these characters.
Old magazines are useful tools to encourage conversation.
Sheet music brings to life stories of dances and sing-songs of yester years.
Advertisements featuring food and recipes often provide the stimulus for people to talk about what they liked to eat when they were children or as adults and they dishes they enjoyed cooking. It can also give rise to memories about certain foods, “Angel Delight” being a particular favourite of many as well as “Batchelors” powdered soup mixes.
Demonstrations bring other aspects to life particularly food preparation and recipes which are popular with young and old alike. These activities often give rise to questions on cookery techniques before the gadgets that we are used to nowadays.
